Op een belangrijke vraag die steeds vaker gesteld wordt zal komende week het eerste antwoord volgen: waarom is er nog niemand gearresteerd als Russiagate een kwaadaardige hoax was?

Het antwoord is deels dat de Republikeinen het dienstiger achtten – gezien de MSM-hysterie over het door de Democraten aangezwengelde Russiagate – eerst die storm te laten uitrazen voor wat het is, en dan pas toe te slaan. Deels is het antwoord ook dat van die tussentijd nuttig gebruikt is door Inspector-general Horowitz (Min Justitie) om gedegen onderzoek te doen naar wat mis ging tijdens de periode dat Russiagate een nationaal schandaal werd. Over Horowitz schreef ik vorig jaar juni voor het laatst uitgebreid, en sindsdien leek zijn onderzoek wat uit de publieke focus te raken. Hetgeen niet betekent dat er niet ijverig aan gewerkt werd. Integendeel. Komende weken is het adagium: bommen los.

The next bombshell report to drop from the Justice Department likely will earn none of the breathless fanfare and media coverage that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report received, but it could be far more incriminating.
In the next several weeks, Inspector General Michael Horowitz is expected to issue his summation of the potential abuse of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act by top officials in the Obama Administration and holdovers in the early Trump Administration who were overseeing the investigation of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.

Om te beginnen zal dat gericht zijn op de aanstichters van het FISA-schandaal. Dat gaat hoogstwaarschijnlijk zowel oud-president Obama als ex-FBI-directeur Comey in moeilijkheden brengen:

Horowitz announced last March that his office would examine the Justice Department’s conduct “in applications filed with the U.S. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) relating to a certain U.S. person.” That U.S. person is Trump campaign associate Carter Page. In October 2016, just two weeks before the presidential election, the Justice Department submitted an application to the FISC seeking authorization to wiretap Page. The court filing accused Page, a Naval Academy graduate and unpaid campaign advisor, of being an agent of Russia.

President Trump heeft vorige maand definitief aangekondigd dat hij van plan is alle documenten die op het in gang zetten van het FISA-onderzoek naar hem en zijn campagnestaf betrekking hebben vrij te geven, en het heeft er alles van weg dat dat ongeveer tegelijk zal plaatsvinden met de publicatie van de eerste bevindingen van Horowitz. In september zag Trump tijdelijk af van dat voornemen in verband met de aanstaande afloop van Russiagate, waarvan hij niet wilde dat iemand zou zeggen dat hij poogde de aandacht af te leiden.

Mr. Trump said in September he wanted to release the full unredacted version of documents related the FISA application to surveil former campaign aide Carter Page. Mr. Trump later walked back that claim, tweeting at the time he had been told it “may have a perceived negative impact on the Russia probe.” The FBI has released redacted surveillance records from Page’s wiretap in July 2018.

Het moment van de waarheid nadert nu:

Representative Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) and James Jordan (R-Ohio) recently met with Horowitz and offered some ominous news for Comey and company: “We anticipate the IG’s report will come out . . . in the next four to six weeks and I think it’s highly likely that we’ll see criminal referrals coming from them,” Meadows told Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo on April 14.
President Trump also speculated that the inspector general’s report would contain damning allegations against former top officials for the world’s most powerful law enforcement agency.

Hoezeer de paniek bij de voormalige Democratische poppenspelers groeit is goed herkenbaar. Als de boodschap niet bevalt moet de boodschapper in diskrediet worden gebracht:

Natasha Bertrand, a reliable mouthpiece for Fusion GPS, is smearing Horowitz and raising questions about his investigation. “Former U.S. officials interviewed by the inspector general were skeptical about the quality of his probe,” she wrote in an April 17 piece for Politico. “The inspector general seemed neither well-versed in the FISA-process nor receptive to the explanations, the officials said.”

Dat Horowitz zich niets liet uitleggen zoals de samenzweerders dat gepland hebben is voor de Democraten inderdaad geen goed teken.

Comey unconvincingly is rejecting accusations by Attorney General William Barr and others that there was “spying” on the Trump campaign. “When I hear that kind of language used, it’s concerning,” serial uptalker Comey said in an April 11 interview. “The FBI and the Department of Justice conduct court-ordered electronic surveillance. I have never thought of that as spying. I don’t know of any court-ordered electronic surveillance aimed at the Trump campaign.

En het is nu letterlijk alle hens aan dek:

(Ex-AG) Sally Yates appeared on Sunday for a softball interview with NBC’s “Meet The Press” host Andrea Mitchell. Without any sense of irony, Mitchell introduced Yates as “someone who seems to show up at key moments in the Trump presidency,” including her central role in the set-up, laughable Logan Act inquiry, and subsequent firing of former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn. (Yates served as acting attorney general for 10 days before Trump fired her for insubordination.)

Maar Yates komt zelf in de schijnwerpers:

In response to her “Meet the Press” interview, Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) tweeted that Yates’ actions “will certainly be part of forthcoming Senate Judiciary Committee oversight hearings on FBI/DOJ during Obama years in which she served as Deputy AG under Loretta Lynch.”

En dat brengt ons bij de vraag die ik aan het begin van dit artikel al aanstipte: waarom zijn de hoofdverdachten nog niet gearresteerd? En, nu we het er tochover hebben: wie zijn het?

On December 9 and 10, 2016, the New York Times and the Washington Post independently reported that anonymous senior intelligence officials had told them that, based on intercepted communications, the intelligence agencies agreed that Russia had hacked the Democratic National Committee to help Donald Trump win the election. Their evidence was the fact of their access to U.S communications intelligence. A flood of subsequent stories also cited allegations by “senior intelligence officials” that “intercepted communications” and “intercepted calls” showed that “members of Donald J. Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and other Trump associates had repeated contacts with senior Russian intelligence officials in the year before the election.”
Incontrovertibly, the officials who gave these stories to the Times and Post violated the Comint Statute, and are subject to the “10 and 10” for each count. There is no clearer instance of what the governing law is, of how it was violated, and of the punishment that this incurs.

Nor is there any doubt as to who at least two of these “senior intelligence officials” are: Former CIA director John Brennan and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper.

Antword op de grote vraag: met belangrijke mensne moet je voorzichtig om gaan. Ze hebben altijd hooggeplaatste vrienden, en zekerheid gat in dergelijke gevallen eenvoudig vóór.

The reasons no prosecutions have followed should be plain enough. The offenders are big people, in the permanent government and in the Democratic Party. They have a great many friends in the U.S Justice Department. From the top down, the Trump Administration has been filled by much smaller people. Loud words aside, the president has kowtowed to the intelligence agencies in every way imaginable. No prominent Republican has chosen to challenge the de facto privileged relationship between Democrats in the intelligence agencies and the media.

Ter geruststelling: als het tot processen komt waarbij beschuldigingen bewezen worden, dan zullen deze heren op de eerstvolgende Democratische president moeten wahten om via gratie ooit nog vrij te komen. Als men dat durft. Op dat moment moeten we helaas wachtem. Het is hoe de wereld op dit moment helaas werkt:

Politics is not responsible for the non-application of Section 798 to Brendan and Clapper. It is difficult to imagine that the public would not approve massively the straightforward application to prominent men of a law that is so unambiguous, which is the foundation of arguably the main part of U.S intelligence, and which has been applied countless times to ordinary people.
Rather, the absence of real politics—of real competition between opposing sides in American life—is the culprit. What we see is that those in the upper echelons of American life, whether they call themselves Republicans or Democrats, have greater loyalty to the ruling class to which they belong than to any law or institution. The refusal to apply Section 798 to Brennan and Clapper —the fact that they are free men —is simply the most obvious manifestation of the fact that we have a ruling class, that it is coherent, and that it has yet to be challenged in any serious way.

Dat neemt niet weg dat dat moment nu snel nadert. Zodat Russiagate haar terechte plek in de geschiedeisboeken kan innemen als het grootste schandaal dat de Amerikaanse democratie ooit beleefd. Als het Democratische/Deep Sate-complot dat het is. Veel klokkenluiders kunnen niet wachten.
