Beste lezers, voor wie vragen over de kop boven dit stukje heeft: Ja, er is Radioactief zand onderweg. Nee, dit is geen regeringshoax om de avondklok te helpen.

Dat Radioactieve zand is onderweg vanuit de Sahara, van een plek waar in 1960 Frankrijk een kernproef deed. Hoe dat hierheen komt? Met de wind. Zoals ook ’s zomers wel eens gebeurd, als u op zee op een schip (pont naar het UK?) bent, en er valt plotseling een schep zand uit de lucht. Dat is dan door de wind meegevoerd vanuit de Sahara waar het vaak via een windhoosachtige gebeurtenis de lucht is ingegaan. Zo gaat het ditmaal ook, maar het is van een windhoos die plaatsvond op een plek waar Frankrijk het in 1960 veilig genoeg vond om een kernproef te doen. Maar dat was toen:

Samples confirmed what was found to be radioactive particles in the dust which had been kicked up by a major storm that recently swept Morocco, creating huge dust clouds that picked up the radioactive material that had been left over from past nuclear tests conducted by France on its then colonial possession of Algeria in the early 1960s.
