Anders dan je van een islamitisch land verwachten zou, is alcohol in Turkije vrij goed verkrijgbaar, en niet illegaal. Ook sterke drank.

In de wat strengere staten staat de alcohol in de privé-koelkast van de sheik, zo is mij door daar mee bekende ooit toevertrouwd, maar Turkije doet er niet ingewikkeld over. Zo lang de staat haar accijnzen maar krijgt, en dat is waarbij het hier om gaat.

Operatie Alcohol is niet gericht tegen illegale alcohol-importen in het algemeen, maar tegen illegaal gestookte alcohol die in normale verpakkingen wordt tegen bodemprijzen onder de toonbank door wordt verkocht. De kwaliteit hiervan laat te wensen over:

Je wordt er nog steeds dronken van, maar als je er ook aan dood gaat is dat een ongewenste bijwerking, zou het OMT ook in Nederland toegeven. Vermoedelijk dan, hè?

Minder bekend is dat dit probleem ook in West-Europa periodiek voorkomt. Hoe hoog de accijnzen in Turkije zijn is me niet bekend, maar in de EU is de accijns op rookwaren al moordend, en die op sterke drank is nog een paar tandjes sterker. Als je regelmatig drinkt gaat dat best aantikken, en zo is het ook in Turkije:

Goede alcohol stoken is echter nog een ware kunst. Het bekende C₂H₅OH (officieel ethylalcohol genaamd) is niet speciaal giftig, maar wie de productie onzorgvuldig doet, krijgt er vaak CH₃OH als extra product bij, en methylalcohol is wel uitermate giftig:

Experts say methyl alcohol found in bootleg drinks is either fatal or has a long-term impact on consumers’ health. Those who escaped death often suffer a loss of sight and for others, bootleg drinks cause perception disorders and kidney failure. Even a small amount of methyl alcohol can prove deadly for drinkers.

Legal drinks contain both ethyl and methyl alcohol, but they are distilled and separated from the end product during the production process, something illegal producers and sellers abstain from.
Associate professor Yücel Yüzbaşıoğlu, an emergency medical expert from Health Sciences University, says methyl alcohol cannot be easily processed by the body and within 10 hours of consumption, drinkers may need hospitalization.

Feitelijk is operatie alcohol dus een poging de Turkse volksgezondheid te ondersteunen. Dat dat tegelijk de accijnzen steunt in economisch moeilijke tijden is niet meer dan een bijproduct.
