Eind oktober mag de Turkse president Erdogan in gesprek met zijn Amerikaanse collega Biden, die dan in Rome is voor de G20.

Ongetwijfeld zal Erdogan dan een poging doem om Turkije alsnog van de zo gewenste F35 Stealth Fighter te voorzien. Het wordt nog interessant om te zien hoe de Amerikaanse poppenspelers van Biden hem zullen proberen te bespelen, waar Erdogan bij aanwezig is. Erdogan lijkt niet iemand die er over zwijgt, als hij zaken waarneemt die wijzen op een president die aan een touwtje gehouden wordt. Vooralsnog lijkt men in Turkije tevreden over de toezegging van een gesprek tussen beide staatshoofden:

The summit is scheduled for Oct. 30-31.
Erdoğan has recently said that relations between Ankara and Washington are not healthy, adding that the two countries need to “sort out” issues over Ankara’s purchase of the Russian S-4400 defense system and Washington’s support to the PKK terror group’s Syrian branch, YPG.
The two countries should work together as friends but “the current direction does not bode well”, Erdoğan said, adding he and Biden had not “started off right”.

De Amerikaanse regering laat al regelmatig horen dat Turkije eerder op een pakket sancties moet rekenen als het inderdaad doet wat het recent al aankondigde: bij Rusland een extra set S400’s bestellen.

In a rare CBS interview which aired Sunday on “Face the Nation”, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced his intent to purchase another round of Russian S-400 air defense systems, after under the prior Trump administration Turkey’s reception of S-400s triggered deteriorated relations with Washington and a years-long diplomatic standoff which saw US threaten sanctions on its NATO ally.

Dat dat gedonder zal geven weet men in Turkije ook wel, maar dat het een onafhankelijk land is dat zijn eigen koers bepaalt hoor je dan al snel overal bovenuit komen.

American senators warned Turkey they would extend new sanctions if the country goes ahead with plans to purchase a new round of Russian-made air defense systems.
The warning came after President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan last week said they still intended to acquire a new batch of S-400 defense systems, despite Washington’s opposition.
Erdoğan is due to meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Sochi on Wednesday, a meeting that is expected to see the two countries reach some important decisions.
Talks are continuing between Russia and Turkey about the delivery of a second batch and the two countries are in the process of signing a new deal in the near future, Alexander Mikheyev, the head of Russia’s state-run arms exporter Rosoboronexport, said in August.
“Nobody will be able to interfere in terms of what kind of defense systems we acquire, from which country, at what level,” Erdoğan told CBS News in an interview last week, saying that Ankara intends to proceed with the purchase of the Russian systems.
