De protesten op Cuba laten tegelijk een gevaar van de collaboratie van Big Tech met totalitaire regimes zien.

Dat het morele benul bij de Big Tech ietwat scheef is, zien we al jaren. De Cubaanse overheid heeft geprobeerd de binnenlandse protesten van de wereld af te sluiten met behulp van Chinese technologie.

Cuba is accused of having adopted China-made technology systems to control and block internet access, amid reports that messaging apps and Cubans’ internet service are being blocked in the communist-ruled country after thousands of citizens took to the streets on July 11 to protest against a lack of freedoms and worsening economic conditions.

En die Chinese technologie is ontwikkeld door de Amerikaanse Big Tech. Overigens is de Cubaanse onrust het zoveelste bewijs dat honger en tekorten belangrijker aanjagers van revolutie zijn dan wat voor sociale onderdrukking ook.

Het nieuwe is de aanwezigheid van Chinese onderdrukkingssoftware nu ook weer niet:

OONI reported in 2017 that Chinese telecom giant Huawei was “found to be supporting Cuba’s internet infrastructure.”

“The server header of blocked sites, for example, pointed to Huawei equipment,” the report reads. “While it is clear that Cuba is using Huawei’s access points, it remains unclear whether and to what extent the company is actually implementing internet censorship in the country.”

The group also said that it had found Chinese codes used for Wi-Fi access portals in Cuba, noting that the login portal of state-owned ETECSA contains in its source code “comments written in Chinese.” The report states that this “indicates that ETECSA likely hired Chinese developers to implement the portal.”

Maar het sluit wel weer naadloos aan bij wat Twitter vandaag verklaarde over het verwijderen van tweets van verslaggevers:

Twitter on Wednesday announced that government demands to remove content posted by journalists and news outlets jumped 26% worldwide in the second half of 2020 vs. the first half of the year, Reuters reports.
According to the company’s transparency report, 199 ‘verified’ journalists and news outlets on its platform were subject to 361 legal demands to remove content – though the social media giant refused to say which countries had submitted them.

En laten we wel zijn: als bekend is dat aan zulke vragen geen gevolg gegeven wordt, worden ze ook niet gesteld. En inderdaad:

Meanwhile, Twitter received over 14,500 requests for information between July 1 and Dec. 31, of which 30% of the requests were honored. India is “the single largest source of all information requests from governments during the second half of 2020, overtaking the United States, which was second in the volume of requests,” according to the report.

Let wel, dit is exclusief de door Twitter zelf gevoerde restricties, waar president Trump recent een rechtszaak over begon, met als oogmerk om het censureren van conservatieve stemmen te laten stoppen, waar met spanning naar gekeken wordt.

De macht van Big Tech is al te groot, die macht delen met onderdrukkende regimes leidt al snel naar het einde van de VvMU. En dat veel politici in de vrije wereld het idee kunnen krijgen dat hem onwelgevallig nieuws eenvoudiger onderdrukt kan worden dan geadresseerd is een gevaarlijke ontwikkeling, zeker gezien de morele zwakte die de politici van de westerse wereld al enige tijd teistert.

Niet alle klanten kunnen gelijk behandeld worden. Dat zal Big Tech ook moeten gaan beseffen.
