Over Hillary Clinton heb ik al een paar keer geschreven dat ze zich zou moeten terug trekken. Niet omdat ik haar niet moet (waar) of omdat ze kansloos is (dat begint waar te worden) maar omdat ze teveel schandalen om haar nek hangen heeft om een waardig kandidaat te zijn. En dat de Democratische partij dat wel degelijk beseft.

Het voormalige hoofd van de military inlichtingendienst DIA, Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, windt er in ieder geval geen doekjes om: ook naar zijn mening zou Clinton er goed aan doen zich uit de race terug te trekken.

Zijn argumenten zijn wellicht iets anders dan concreet en objectief: hij vindt het bijvoorbeeld schandalig dat de druk op de FBI het onderzoek naar Clinton af te ronden alvorens zij officieel Democratisch presidentskandidaat is, andere prioriteiten van de FBI belemmert. Maar het is weinig anders dan wat ik eerder al beweerde – mogelijk zelfs een sterker punt, aangezien hij er vanuit lijkt te gaan dat dat onderzoek voor Clinton dodelijke resultaten hebben zal.

He said Clinton’s excuse – that the scandal is the result of classification run amuck in the intelligence community – does not pass muster.

“This over-classification excuse is not an excuse. If it’s classified, it’s classified.

In de ogen van Flynn is er dus geen enkele andere uitkomst denkbaar dan dat Clinton strafbare feiten heeft gepleegd op een wijze die absoluut niet door de beugel kan. En inderdaad zou dit iets zijn dat de Democratische partij zich meer zou moeten aantrekken: kun je een president laten verkiezen die stunts zoals Clinton uithaalt? Als het antwoord negatief is – dan zou die partij nu in dienen te grijpen.

Maar aangezien de Democratische partij in haar maag zit met het enig resterende alternatief – Bernie Sanders – ploegen zij door in de hoop dat Sanders afhaakt alvorens Clinton niet langer te handhaven valt. Of dat lukt staat te bezien, en de schade die de Democratische partij als gevolg hiervan op zal lopen neemt men kennelijk evenmin mee in de overwegingen. Voer voor psychologen.
