Over Oekraïne behoudt de EU zich een ouderwets schizofrene houding voor. Enerzijds betitelt men berichten van UK en USA als alarmistisch, anderzijds is het blok doende sancties voor te bereiden die alleen gerechtvaardigd zijn als UK en USA gelijk krijgen.

De EU-laven hebben er een fraai staaltje van:

Premier Mark Rutte is “hoopvol” dat de lidstaten van de Europese Unie het spoedig eens worden over een sanctiepakket tegen Rusland voor het geval dat land Oekraïne binnenvalt. Rusland heeft militairen samengetrokken bij de grens met Oekraïne en de vrees is dat de Russen het buurland zullen binnenvallen.

Echter:

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell during Monday statements to the press appeared to openly mock the UK and US for their dramatic announcements of embassy personnel evacuations due to threat of a Russian invasion of Ukraine. He said there’s no need to “dramatize” the situation given there’s high hopes that ongoing diplomacy will prevail. Moscow too has continued to condemn what it called “disinformation hysteria” prevailing in the West, which is fueling the crisis further.

But it seems London is content to hype things further, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday citing “gloomy” intelligence from UK intel officials warning that Russia is planning a “lightning war” to take out Ukraine’s capital of Kiev. Johnson said in a message directed at Russia that an offensive would be a “disastrous step” and “bloody business”.

Een Russische Blitzkrieg dreigt derhalve? Zozo. Welwel. NATO reageerde alvast door de lidstaten te versterken, en zo op het oog ook klaar te staan zich met niet-lidstaten te bemoeien:

On Monday NATO announced it has put its forces on “standby” while initiating deployment of additional ships and fighter jets to Eastern Europe. “NATO will continue to take all necessary measures to protect and defend all Allies, including by reinforcing the eastern part of the Alliance,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said in a statement.

Gisteren kregen de families van Amerikaanse en Britse diplomaten al te horen dat ze Oekraïne snel moesten verlaten – een klassieke inleiding net voor het begin van vijandelijkheden.

…moments ago the US has once again done everything in its power to further inflame tensions when it ordered family members of US government workers at the US embassy in Kyiv to leave Ukraine “due to the continued threat of Russian military action,” the State Department said Sunday.

At the same time, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken explained during Sunday news talk show appearances that at this point it’s “too early” to impose sanctions on Russia, despite the current atmosphere of building war rhetoric. He still threatened “massive consequences” for any Russian offensive, yet stressed that US is still leaving the door open for diplomacy. An eventual diplomatic resolution to the crisis is looking more and more likely given the lack of a unified NATO willingness to escalate to the level of armed conflict, particularly given Germany’s breaking with other allies of the last few days, including its refusal to send Kiev German arms. Thus it seems “all options” are not on the table just yet…

Enfin, tegen de tijd dat het westen het onderling eens is en alle neuzen dezelfde kant op staan, zijn in heel Oekraïne de richtingwjizers en plaatsnaamborden al weer in het Russisch gesteld.

Dat maakt de zaak niet minder gevaarlijk:

Without doubt the situation is still highly dangerous, and ripe to unravel in the instance of a single provocation or mishap along the Russia-Ukraine border. The longer that dialogue and negotiations stall, the more the door is open for both sides to tumble into a shooting war.
