Met USA2020 op de deurmat – dinsdag zijn de Amerikaanse verkiezingen al – is een blik op de wijze van politiek redeneren interessanter dan ooit.

Twee leden van het Mises Institute bespreken de zaak voor populisme, en de historische angst er voor bij mensen als James Madison (1751-1836), Jefferson en andere Amerikaanse mastodonten uit de beginjaren van de USA.

Is het populisme waarvoor men ooit angst had nog wel hetzelfde populisme als waar tegen nu soms wordt gewaarschuwd? Het is een discussie die voor West-Europa wellicht zelfs sterker geldt dan voor de USA, en het hier besproken contra-mechanisme is in ieder geval duidelijk herkenbaar.

Why did Murray Rothbard embrace populism and why did he think it could work to limit the power of the state? In short, Rothbard believed that a small elite had seized the power of the state to fleece and oppress the majority. Rothbard was in part basing his ideas on the historical narrative of the Democratic populists of the nineteenth century who formed the party of sound money, low taxes, and decentralized power. This laissez-faire party also managed to win a lot of elections.

    Heel goed hier, aandacht aan te besteden.

    De onstaans-geschiedenis, en natuurlijk de inhoud van :
    – de Onafhankelijkheid-verklaring
    – de Constitution
    is buitengewoon interessant en belangrijk.

    Het probleem met de term “populisme” is, is dat er zo ongeveer alles onder
    verstaan, geschoven en verweten kan worden.
    Invloed van de meerheid van de mensen, is nooit verkeerd ……
    …….. in een democratische rechtstaat, met vrije media !
