Rampverhalen voor de nabije toekomst -8-
Wat het precies worden gaat is nog niet bekend, maar over een paar dingen zijn de wetenschappers achter de rampverhalen voor de nabije toekomst het nu al eens: het is UW schuld, en de belastingen moeten omhoog. Want duur wordt het natuurlijk ook. Vandaag: galactische virussen.
Het goede nieuws van vandaag is: dit probleem is uw schuld niet. Het slechte nieuws is: u gaat er nog steeds aan dood, en wilt u overleven, dan dient u zich te laten leegschudden. Want het is veel erger dan uw ergste nachtmerrie over de huismijt (die met tienduizenden uw beddegoed bevolkt) zou kunnen bewerkstelligen:
Each day, they calculated, some 800 million viruses cascade onto every square meter of the planet.
Dat zijn 1156.000.000.000 virussen. Per dag. Dat er dan ook nog circa 3.000.000.000.000 virussen in zee belanden laten we voor het gemak verder buiten beschouwing.
Deze virussen dalen neer vanuit de atmosfeer die de aarde omgeeft.
Scientists have surmised there is a stream of viruses circling the planet, above the planet’s weather systems but below the level of airline travel.
En als het nu nog zou zijn dat el virus jaloers vasthoudt aan haar eigen vierkante meter, maar nee:
“It wouldn’t be unusual to find things swept up in Africa being deposited in North America.”
Misschien is het uw schuld niet (maar misschien ook wel)
Generally it’s assumed these viruses originate on the planet and are swept upward, but some researchers theorize that viruses actually may originate in the atmosphere. (There is a small group of researchers who believe viruses may even have come here from outer space, an idea known as panspermia.)
In ieder geval beïnvloeden ze het leven op aarde op een ongekende schaal:

Researchers recently identified an ancient virus that inserted its DNA into the genomes of four-limbed animals that were human ancestors. That snippet of genetic code, called ARC, is part of the nervous system of modern humans and plays a role in human consciousness — nerve communication, memory formation and higher-order thinking. Between 40 percent and 80 percent of the human genome may be linked to ancient viral invasions.
En als u nu denkt: brrrrrrrrrr…. Dan heeft u gelijk:
While some viruses and other organisms have evolved together and have achieved a kind of balance, an invasive virus can cause rapid, widespread changes and even lead to extinction.
En eigenlijk hadden we dat kunnen weten:
When species disappear, the changes can ripple through an ecosystem. A textbook example is a viral disease called rinderpest.
The Italian army brought a few cattle into North Africa, and in 1887 the virus took off across the continent, killing a broad range of cloven-hoofed animals from Eritrea to South Africa — in some cases wiping out 95 percent of the herds.
Het zou natuurlijk mee kunnen vallen:
“Viruses aren’t our enemies,” Dr. Suttle said. “Certain nasty viruses can make you sick, but it’s important to recognize that viruses and other microbes out there are absolutely integral for the ecosystem.”
Maar moet u daar op rekenen?
Afijn, u begreep het al: nu is er weinig geld, maar als daarvan meer beschikbaar is, wordt alles beter. Alsof de echo’s van Billy Graham nog nagalmen. En zoals u weet:
