Dat de gerechtelijke macht (en wie daarbij denkt te horen) in zowel Nederland als de rest van Europa meer dan haar portie idioten bezit besprak Toon Kasdorp gisteren al. Ter illustratie van zijn gelijk vandaag een pregnant voorbeeld.

Edinburgh University doet onderzoek (artikel kunt u lezen na gratis registratie) naar een rechtenstudent die op Facebook IS had bespot. Want hij:

put “minority students at risk and in a state of panic and fear”.
An official at the university who conducted a preliminary investigation allegedly accused the third-year law student of having committed a “hate crime” even though there has been no criminal investigation by the police.

Robbie Stravers erkent:

(..)acknowledged that his social media comments were highly opinionated but he denied that they were racist or in any way incited violence.
He said: “I am deeply worried that I am being investigated for comments which are expressions of opinion in a jovial way . . . I do not incite the harassment or racist treatment, nor attack anyone with an illegal suggestion or suggest, indeed, that they be deprived of their human rights.”

Dat de BBC het tegenwoordig over moslims als etnische groep (!!!) heeft blijkt meer waanzinnigen tot actie beroerd te hebben. Je behoort tot een etnische groep als je als zodanig geboren bent. In tegenstelling tot wat islam beweert over als moslim geboren worden is wat veel moslims hierover graag geloven pure kletskoek. Wat zei Travers precies?

“I’m glad we could bring these barbarians a step closer to collecting their 72 virgins.”

“I won’t give elements of Islam or Muslims who hold regressive beliefs a free pass for their assorted poisonous bigotries and regressive values because they face bigotry.
“If you have terrible, oppressive views that seek to attack the rights of others, expect to be called out for those views, regardless of being oppressed yourself . . .”

Misschien is dat inderdaad niet aardig, maar als we dat als een reden voor onderzoek accepteren kan de helft van de wereldwijde populatie aan cartoonisten zich in Dartmoor of zoiets melden. Maar als een combinatie van minderheden oproept tot actie durven universiteiten dat niet langer weg te lachen. Hoe bespottelijk de redenatie ook is:

Esme Allman, a second-year history student and the former black and ethnic minority convenor of the university’s students’ association, filed a complaint to the university, saying: “Not only do I believe this behaviour to be in breach of the student code of conduct, but his decision to target the BME Liberation Group at the University of Edinburgh, and how he has chosen to do so, puts minority students at risk and in a state of panic and fear while attending the University of Edinburgh.”

Sowieso, een black and ethnic minority convenor of the university’s students’ association?? Doe effe normaal zeg. Dat dergelijke clubs een voorzitter hebben, een secretaris en penningmeester en voor mijn part een hoofdredacteur van het clubblad, best. Maar een black and ethnic minority convenor of the university’s students’ association?? Je zult het op je CV hebben staan. Zo’n vrijwillig stigma raak je van je leven niet meer kwijt. En dat je daar dan mee om gaat alsof het je een recht geeft iedereen maar te koeioneren?

“While I have not met him personally, given my matriculation at the University of Edinburgh, my membership of the Black and Minority Ethnic Liberation Group at the university, and how I identify personally, I take issue with this clear and persistent denigration and disparagement of protected characteristics and blatant Islamophobia.”

Hoewel, zoals bekend zijn bij dergelijke activisten niet alle varkens gelijk:

Ms Allman wrote: “To conclude, black men are trash. All men are trash.”

Ik zou het niet nemen als ik daar studeerde. Maar dan komt zo’n hittepetit wel met een klacht als:

“Travers published a decontextualised quote by Allman from a privileged conversation generated by minority students in a safe space he is neither subscribed to nor a member of, without her consent”.

Het commentaar van de Universiteit van Edinburgh was zowel neutraal klinkend als intens dom:

“We are committed to providing an environment in which all members of the university community treat each other with dignity and respect and our code of student conduct sets out clear expectations of behaviour.”

Met andere woorden: mensen die gekwetst zouden kunnen worden, moeten per definitie serieus worden genomen als ze ergens stampij over maken. Ik noem dat idioot, en wie daar in meegaat eveneens. Maar als moderne universiteiten ons iets leren, is dat idioterie tegenwoordig de norm lijkt. De enige reden om in Schotland te gaan studeren is thans nog dat er geen collegegeld hoeft te worden betaald. Wat dat doet met de kwaliteit van de studenten zien we hier maar weer eens gedemonstreerd.
